Oct. 16th - Bike camping with Giants in Canada.

We crossed the border on Saturday night without incident and continued through Thunder Bay to stop and sleep in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park here in Ontario. We awoke to a beautiful, wooded, sunny, scenery which helped keep our mind off of how cold it was (40 degrees for a high). We had already decided to go camping in the Park for the next day hopefully being able to hike in and see what we could. So when we found out we could bike in to a campsite we were all for it and after a half hour of packing and situating our gear we started down the trail. Right away we realized that the ride was going to be a little more intense then we had originally suspected and as we chattered our way picking and choosing our path through the rocky trail we wondered how long 6km actually felt like. It turned out not to be a bad ride albeit a few interesting sections but it was worth it when we got to our site. A short path led us to a gorgeous rocky shoreline looking out at Lake Superior and Isle Royale. The water was a wonderful turquoise hue only interrupted by the white-caps raging across the surface forged on by the horrendous winds which have been chasing us since Grand Marais.

After finding some bear scat in our general vicinity we debated over whether to camp there and we decided it wasn't too big of a deal and we'd just be super cautious about our foodstuffs. After setting up camp and a quick lunch we headed off down the trail in search of some views. .

This we found and more on a 16km (10mile) hike up and over some ridges on the Top of the Giant trail. The hike was enjoyable although tougher then we had expected. The path was less worn then we're used to in the U.S.'s National Parks we have visited but it made for more interesting sites through the twists and turns. We made it to the top of the ridgeline overlooking Lake Superior but ended up getting turned back before we could get to the very top of the Giant due to amazingly strong wind gusts and stinging rain. We returned to our site to read and make dinner before settling down. After dinner we were able to watch an amazing sunset before settling in to our tent. The wind ripped through the campsite continuing through whole night not letting up til the next morning
